Executive VP at The Permanente Medical Group joins UCL GBSH to advance its next stage of growth

28 May 2024

The world’s first business school dedicated to health, UCL’s Global Business School for Health (UCL GBSH), today announces the appointment of Lawrence Hamilton, Executive Vice President of Performance at The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG), as Honorary Professor of Practice.

LH press release

TPMG is the largest and one of the most distinguished physician-led medical groups in the United States, with approximately 9,800 physicians and 47,000 staff delivering high-quality healthcare to more than 4.5 million Kaiser Permanente members in Northern California. Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s leading healthcare providers, was established in 1945 and today provides high-quality, affordable health care services to 12.5 million members in 8 states and the District of Columbia. Kaiser Permanente is comprised of the Permanente Medical Groups, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals.

In his senior leadership role at TPMG, Hamilton is responsible for TPMG’s 47,000 employees and is the administrative leader focused on systematically turning the medical group’s strategy into high performance by advancing learning and continuous performance improvement. He also is at the heart of advancing Kaiser Permanente's vision to create the next generation of successful healthcare leaders in their careers and communities. He is a sponsor of the Kaiser Permanente Administrative Fellowship Program, designed to attract and develop future senior leaders at Kaiser Permanente, and he has responsibility for the Kaiser Permanente School of Allied Health Sciences, which provides state-of-the-art education programmes for a range of clinical professions.

Hamilton has served in several leadership roles at Kaiser Permanente since he joined the organisation in 2005, serving at regional and local levels in Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California and mid-Atlantic regions for TPMG and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. Prior to his work at Kaiser Permanente, Hamilton spent five years in Tanzania as the CEO of Aga Khan Health Service. Before that, he worked in the UK NHS as Deputy CEO of North WestLondon NHS Hospitals Trust, and was a partner of a healthcare consulting company.

In line with UCL GBSH’s role as a global hub of academic research and teaching excellence to inspire the next generation of healthcare leaders, Hamilton will provide students with unique insights into running one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States.

Hamilton’s professorship follows a trio of senior appointments that expand UCL GBSH’s international partnerships. Former Australian Health Minister Professor the Hon Greg Hunt was announced as Honorary Professor earlier in the year, and more recently Jean Gomes, New York Times bestselling author and experienced CEO advisor, was appointed Honorary Professor of Practice.

“I am honoured that Lawrence is joining UCL GBSH as Honorary Professor of Practice as we look forward to the launch of our new Undergraduate course in the year ahead”, Colton said. “This is an important milestone for the School in providing first-class healthcare management education, and bringing Lawrence on board provides our students with the opportunity to learn from one of the biggest healthcare systems in America.”

“It’s an honour to join the first global business school devoted to health, at UCL, one of the world’s top 10 universities,” Hamilton said. “UCL GBSH takes pride in ‘disruptive, critical thinking and widespread influence for the long-term benefit of humanity, dedicated to practical impact and improving society.’ These are attributes that resonate deeply with The Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Permanente. Our model of care coverage and delivery achieves leading population health outcomes for the communities we serve. Outstanding healthcare management leaders are an essential ingredient for health systems to deliver for our societies. It’s a privilege to contribute to developing the next generation of global healthcare leaders.”
