19 March 2024
Meet Ashlyn Heidenreich, a dedicated MSc student at UCL GBSH. With a passion for science and a desire to explore its business aspects, she thrives in the dynamic environment, embracing challenges and opportunities for growth. Read about her journey below.
Why did you choose to apply for the MSc?
My interest in science was ignited at a young age and has since grown into a deep appreciation for its intricate nature, practical application, and reach into all aspects of life. After successfully pursuing neuroscience at an undergraduate level, I aimed to further my study of the sciences from a business perspective. Postgraduate study allows me to spearhead these efforts and achieve my professional aspirations of advancing in the pharmaceutical industry while also satisfying my intellectual curiosity.
I was specifically drawn to the Biotech and Pharmaceutical Management MSc offered at UCL GBSH for several reasons. As a global top 10 university with longstanding health credentials, UCL offers the unique opportunity to learn from world-renowned scholars in the field. I was eager to become a member of UCL’s outstanding academic community and to expand my global network by building meaningful connections with a diverse group of professors, students, and alumni. Additionally, as the world's first business school for health, UCL GBSH is the ideal academic environment for me to engage in innovative cutting-edge research which provides me with valuable skills crucial in the pharmaceutical industry.
Talk me through a typical day in life as a GBSH student.
Each day is different, but my typical weekday as an MSc student at UCL GBSH is as follows;
9:00 - Getting Ready
I begin my mornings with a quick exercise. If the weather is nice, I jog along the River Thames, but most days I simply do calisthenics, or yoga in my living room. I then begin cooking breakfast and packing lunch. After eating, I spend the remainder of my time getting ready for a day on campus.
12:00 - Commute to Campus
While on the Tube, I review the necessary lecture notes and readings for the day.
13:00 - Class
After arriving on campus, I meet with some course mates and grab a quick coffee at the cafe in One Pool Street. I then head to my first lecture, and then seminar.
15:00 - Lunch
After classes have finished, I meet up with friends to eat lunch. Depending on the day, we will either eat on campus or take a quick walk to the food courts at Westfield.
16:00 - Study
I spend the remainder of my time on campus in one of the group study areas with course mates. During this time, I prepare for the next day and work on any assignments.
20:00 - Home
After a full day on campus, I begin my commute home. As an international student, I don't see my family often, so this is the time of day where I call my parents. Once home, I make dinner and eat with my housemate.
What have you enjoyed the most since starting at the UCL GBSH?
One of the most exciting aspects of university life is the wealth of people you will encounter - something I have found to be exceptionally true at UCL GBSH. The professors and postgraduate teaching assistants (PGTAs) go above and beyond to forge genuine connections with each student, taking the time to learn about our individual interests, goals, and challenges. This supportive atmosphere allows students to feel comfortable exploring new ideas, asking questions, and seeking help if needed.
In addition to staff, GBSH brings together a diverse cohort of international students from across the world, creating a vibrant and multicultural community. Through collaborative projects, lively discussions, and shared experiences, the MSc Biotech and Pharmaceutical Management cohort has become a tight-knit community, supporting each other through our shared academic journey. Overall, the people of GBSH are what truly make UCL stand out from other universities. The combination of supportive faculty, a diverse student body, and the lifelong friendships I've formed have created an unparalleled educational experience that I will cherish long after graduation.
What advice would you give to prospective students thinking about applying for the MSc?
Undertaking an MSc in Biotech and Pharmaceutical Management at UCL is an exciting milestone. To make the most of this experience, I would advise prospective students to be proactive in their learning. The MSc program is intensive and challenging, so participate in class discussions, ask questions, and seek guidance from professors and PGTAs when needed. GBSH offers various opportunities to connect with industry professionals through guest lectures, networking events, and projects. Take advantage of these opportunities to gain insights into the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors and build professional networks.
It is also important to remember that the MSc program is not just about academic achievement; it's also an opportunity for personal development. Embrace new challenges, step out of your comfort zone, and be open to learning about yourself and others.
