Our Social Media Ambassador, Ran Mo, shares his top learnings and the things he has enjoyed the most whilst studying at GBSH.
After immersing myself in the academic rigours of the Global Business School for Health (GBSH) at UCL for 6 months, I was astounded by how rapidly my last reading week had elapsed, thereby signalling the start of my research project. In light of this realisation, I would like to share some advice and a personal account of my transformative journey at GBSH, especially for prospective students.
Here are the top 3 things I have learned at GBSH.
1. Knowledge and business awareness
As an MSc Biotech and Pharmaceutical management student at GBSH, I have successfully laid a formidable foundation of knowledge in both the biotech and business arenas.
In the biotech and pharmaceuticals field, I have had the distinct privilege of acquainting myself with the latest advancements, including the vanguard concepts and technologies such as gene editing, cell therapies, and personalized medicine.
Moreover, my academic voyage has equipped me with a multifarious repertoire of research methodologies, ranging from experimental design to data analysis and statistical methods, thereby enabling me to conduct ground-breaking research in this exciting domain. Furthermore, I have gleaned valuable insights into critical topics, including clinical trial design, healthcare policy, and healthcare equity, which have enabled me to comprehend the broader context within which biotech and pharmaceuticals operate and empowered me to develop innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the industry.
On the business front, I have had the opportunity to cultivate my business acumen and refine my presentation skills through an assortment of courses, projects and guest lectures, which have honed my marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship prowess. Notably, my academic sojourn has afforded me an unparalleled understanding of crucial aspects such as strategy, marketing and supply chain management, which are indispensable in a professional setting. By and large, my experience at GBSH has been a transformative one, and I feel confident that the knowledge and skills that I have gained will serve me well in my future endeavours.
2. Teamwork
UCL, an exceptionally cosmopolitan university, has provided me with a unique opportunity to work alongside a cohort of students hailing from diverse backgrounds in this rapidly evolving landscape. In particular, GBSH's expansive repertoire of business case studies and presentations has proven instrumental in augmenting my team collaboration and intercultural communication competencies. As I navigate this dynamic milieu, I have gleaned valuable insights into how to operate effectively in a global context, engendering a heightened sense of cultural sensitivity and a greater ability to leverage diversity for the collective good.
All in all, my experience at UCL has been nothing short of transformative. I am confident that the skills and knowledge I have acquired will be invaluable as I embark upon my professional journey.
3. Networking and professional development
Networking and professional development represent an integral aspect of my time at UCL, a preeminent institution ranked among the top 10 universities globally. Here, I have been afforded many opportunities to engage with an array of individuals, including distinguished professors, industry luminaries, accomplished business clubs, and like-minded peers.
Through these interactions, I have been able to establish meaningful connections that hold tremendous potential to catalyse my future professional growth. Furthermore, I have availed myself of the myriad of workshops and career services on offer, honing essential competencies that are indispensable in a rapidly evolving job market.
The combination of these experiences has imbued me with a newfound confidence and a deep sense of purpose, enabling me to pursue my professional aspirations with renewed vigour and purpose.
Here are the top 3 things I have enjoyed the most at GBSH.
1. Cultural diversity
UCL's thriving campus community is renowned for its vast and diverse student population, comprising individuals from over 150 countries. As a member of the Global Business School for Health, I had the immense pleasure of acquainting myself with people from various cultural backgrounds, each with unique and fascinating perspectives.
This enriching experience has not only broadened my horizons but also nurtured my ability to embrace and celebrate cultural diversity. Moreover, the university's dynamic and inclusive campus culture has provided me with countless opportunities to partake in a variety of cultural events and activities, further enriching my experience at UCL.
2. Good academic vibe and fantastic library
UCL has an academic atmosphere that is intellectually stimulating and challenging, and the library serves as a focal point for academic life on campus. With a vast collection of books, journals, and other scholarly resources, the library provides a rich and supportive learning environment that inspires students to reach their full potential. It is easy to connect with like-minded individuals who share similar academic interests and goals through participation in study groups, academic societies, and other extracurricular activities, fostering a collaborative and enriching community.
3. A supportive environment
The Global Business School for Health at UCL offers a personalised and supportive learning experience, with a smaller, more tightly knit class to impact a closer connection between students, professors, and industry professionals. With a smaller class size, students benefit from more personalised attention from their instructors and are able to collaborate and discuss complex topics in a more in-depth and meaningful way. This also enables a stronger sense of community within the program, creating a supportive environment where students can develop their skills and knowledge together.
Moreso, the faculty at GBSH are particularly attuned to their student’s individual needs and goals, providing guidance and support for coursework, research, and career opportunities. Through a range of guest lectures and industry events, students have the opportunity to learn from and network with leading experts in the field, gaining valuable insights and connections that can benefit them throughout their careers.
All in all, the Global Business School for Health at UCL provides a truly unique and enriching learning experience for students looking to make their mark in the world of healthcare and beyond.
Something that I know now, that I wish I knew before studying for my Master’s is a clearer understanding of my career plan. I can focus on applying for the career direction I want to develop in the future earlier and use GBSH resources more effectively to serve my career planning. GBSH teachers are very supportive and are happy to help every student develop their future career in daily academic study.
On a last note, I would like to end this post with some advice for future GBSH students. First of all, congratulations on getting such a good offer! Due to the characteristics of GBSH, the School requires you to accumulate more academic and professional knowledge related to the whole healthcare industry on the basis of traditional business school studies. In addition, academic writing and English expression are very important.
Start getting used to a large number of case studies and frequent presentations every week, before starting your studies. It will be helpful for you to browse the business news, prospectus, consulting report, equity research report and literature related to the technical details of each hot drug and treatment plan in the health industry.
Start practising case studies in advance because this will run through the entire master's studies.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time at GBSH as much as I have!
