Top 5 GBSH Welcome Week Highlights

11 October 2022

From an MBA Health Residential weekend to the first ever GBSH social and an exclusive Inaugural Lecture and Reception with guest speaker Jeremy Hunt, it's safe to say the first GBSH Welcome Week was a resounding success!

Last week, we welcomed over 300 students to the Global Business School for Health (GBSH). We were so excited to finally meet our postgraduate students in person and host an array of exciting welcome events to immerse our students into UCL life!
Here are our top 5 highlights from the week.

1. Inaugural Lecture and Reception featuring Jeremy Hunt

The number one highlight of Welcome Week has to be the GBSH Inaugural Lecture and Reception, featuring a guest lecture from Rt Jeremy Hunt. Jeremy Hunt spoke to our first cohort of students and our esteemed guests about what he learned about the NHS and healthcare management during his time as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

After a fascinating lecture from Jeremy Hunt, GBSH students got the chance to meet their personal tutors as well as network with the Health Executives in Residence. Drinks and cake were enjoyed out on The Last Drop Café terrace, overlooking the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the late afternoon autumn sun. It truly was the perfect event to warmly welcome the first-ever cohort of UCL GBSH students!

2. MBA Health Residential

One of the most exciting events of Welcome Week was the MBA Health Residential. GBSH MBA Health students spent the end of Welcome Week in the Bedfordshire countryside, getting to know one another, engaging in a healthcare challenge, celebrating their new colleague's cultures and enjoying some great food!

3. GBSH Social and Quiz

Another highlight of Welcome Week was the first ever GBSH social event! Hosted from the UCL East Campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, students grouped in teams to answer a series of fun questions about UCL, London and global healthcare. After a nail-biting tie-break question, Team Changemakers, a group of MSc Digital Health and Entrepreneurship students, came out on top!

4. MBA Health Brunch

Making use of the UCL East campus being situated right next to the largest shopping centre in Europe, Westfield Stratford, our MBA Health students enjoyed an informal brunch together at the Hungry Bedouin. With tasty food and the opportunity to properly network and meet one another, it was a great start to the week for the MBA Health students.

5. GBSH Welcome Lecture

Welcome Week began with a bang with our GBSH Welcome Talk. Professor Nora Colton, director of the GBSH, warmly welcomed all of the new GBSH students from the heart of the UCL Bloomsbury campus. After an inspiring talk on the importance of creating a new generation of healthcare leaders that will change the world of healthcare for the better, Nora Colton welcomed GBSH Visiting Professor Mark Britnell to the stage. Mark Britnell is a senior partner at the professional services firm KPMG and is a renowned global healthcare expert. Mark gave a fascinating talk to our students, sharing his wealth of experience working in global health. This exciting welcome event culminated with Mark Britnell signing copies of his book ‘In Search of the Perfect Health System’ for GBSH students.
