About Us

ExCiteS brings together a diverse range of experts who create methodologies, tools, and guiding theories. These resources help communities start their own Citizen Science projects.

We aim to provide every user, no matter their background or literacy level, with tools to collect, analyse, and act on information. These tools follow agreed-upon scientific methods.

Our Interdisciplinary Approach

For 'Extreme' Citizen Science projects to succeed, narrow disciplinary knowledge is not enough. They require community engagement and the skill to deliver practical solutions. There are also many technical challenges and human-technology interaction issues to overcome. Additionally, understanding the questions around the science of Citizen Science is key.

Our interdisciplinary group brings together experts from various fields, including geographers, anthropologists, computer scientists, Human-Computer Interaction experts, designers, electronic engineers, and ecologists. This diverse knowledge allows us to create methodologies, tools, and guiding theories to help communities start their own Citizen Science projects.

We focus on participatory sensing, monitoring, and modelling activities. Communities decide what measurements are taken and how they are studied, allowing them to take part in and lead future decision-making and actions. We aim to change the current state of the art by developing technologies that help members of the public understand and manage their environment using proven scientific methods and models.
