Starting out at the UCL Department of Geography? Our students share their advice for navigating student life.

Cami Warren Article

Beginning your academic journey can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help you out, MSc Environment, Politics and Society student Cami Warren shares practical tips on navigating academia, campus life and making the most of your time with us.

Academic Tips

"Decide on a notetaking system and stick with it! For me, I am not good at keeping up with lots of pieces of paper so I prefer an online option and use Microsoft OneNote.

"But don’t worry if you don’t have a Microsoft Licence, as you can download the software for free to use whilst you’re at UCL.

"It’s also a good idea to consider how you’re going to store your references before coursework gets underway.

"I couldn’t live (metaphorically speaking!) without using reference management software, and it has saved hours of work and stress!

"I use Zotero, but there are lots of options to pick from.

"The UCL Library team provides lots of information and support sessions if using reference management software is new to you."

Campus Life

"There is lots to get involved in at UCL outside of your course (much more than is possible)! A good starting point is to look at UCL’s student union event listings.

"If you’re like me and don’t drink alcohol or are worried about not knowing people, be assured that they also have alcohol-free events and speed-friending sessions.

"If you like playing sports or having hobbies, consider joining a UCL club or society, but be aware there is a lot to choose from!

"I would recommend trying out one or two things to make sure that you don’t overload yourself or be too ambitious.

"UCL’s Student Union also have several student networks which represent particular groups of students, such as international students or people of colour. These are free to join and a great space to meet similar students.

"If you are shy or feel nervous about going to events without knowing people, try and ask another student on your course if they would like to go for a coffee after a lecture or meet for lunch.

"The chances are they will say yes! This was a good way for me to make friends last year."

Personal Insights

"I wish that I had been braver when speaking with academics and in class. I was worried about people thinking I was stupid but actually, we are all there to learn.

"I found that all the tutors were keen to hear our thoughts even if they weren’t fully formed, as this is part of the learning process.

"Remember that the tutors all have availability to discuss your questions and thoughts about content and assignments, so make sure you take the opportunity to speak with them.

"For some of my international friends, this was a new (and scary) experience, but once you do it you’ll feel much better than getting stressed and not enjoying your learning experience."
