The vapour phase detection of explosives and/or explosive related compounds through the use of fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
Terrorism related explosive attacks: The increase in terrorism related explosive attacks in recent years has led to the urgent need in detection methods that successfully identify explosives or explosive related materials on a person, surface or as a vapour. The aim of my research is to probe the vapour phase detection of explosives and/or explosive related compounds through the use of fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
Synthesising MOFs: My recent work has developed and characterized a number of novel zinc and lanthanide containing MOFs utilizing aromatic fluorescent linkers. These highly fluorescent porous materials have demonstrated rapid and reversible quenching upon exposure to key analytes.
Constructing a portable explosives detection platform: Future work will envisage the use of the synthesised MOFs to build a sensory array, which will aim to be used in the construction of a novel and portable explosives detection platform.
