Roberts G08, Sir David Davies Lecture Theatre, Roberts Building, Malet Place

Boys Bathing (1908) - Henry Scott Tuke

This lecture will capture the strange relationship between innocence, naivety and boldness in the work of D. H. Lawrence and E. M. Forster. Queer meanings circulated in Britain after the Wilde trials, and Dr Hugh Stevens from UCL English will consider the writers as 'Queer Edwardians', exploring representations of same-sex desire in their writing before World War One. Dr Stevens will examine Forster's short stories and his novel Maurice up close, and will also look at a range of Lawrence's novels and short stories.
A drinks reception follows in the Roberts Foyer G02.
