German Literature on the Beach

10 April 2014

Friday May 30

Roberts G06, Sir Ambrose Fleming Lecture Theatre, Roberts Building, Malet Place

German beach chair

Time for a holiday? What will you be reading? Think again about German literature! This event showcases highlights from the recent and contemporary German literary scene, or newly re-issued classic works, all of them in English translation – and all of them entertaining, gripping or fortifying. We present Irmgard Keun’s ‘Weimar-era Bridget Jones’, and Ingo Schulze’s humorous panorama of the post-reunification East.

We suggest, too, Daniel Kehlmann’s twin stories of the explorer Humboldt and the mathematician Gauss, two real-life grumpy geniuses and the absurd situations they keep finding themselves in, Hans Keilson’s autobiographically-inspired story of a Dutch couple offering shelter to a Jew during the German occupation, and more – come and find out what every well-read holidaymaker should pack this year.
