From 24-25 several of our UG Programmes will have a slightly different look for Year 1 as we phase in new core courses. Click on the Programme links below for more details.

We are keen to ensure students feel part of a community at UCL and therefore offer programme-specific core modules in Year 1, that students take together with their respective cohort. These provide a broad sense of the discipline and an opportunity to share learning experiences. They also support students to make informed choices for their future years of study to carve out a degree pathway that suits them.

All descriptions include information about the content, assessment, reading lists and academic contact details. This information is a guide only and may be subject to change without notice. Elective modules offered as part of the programmes may be withdrawn in the event of low uptake. Comparative Literature

Modules:

From 24-25, Y1 Comparative Literature students will be required to take: LITC0001, LITC0002, LITC0010, LITC0027, LITC0028.
From 24-25, Y1 Comparative Literature with Year Abroad students will be required to take: LITC0001, LITC0002, LITC00010, LITC0027.

Dutch

From 24-25, DUTC0003 and DUTC0004 will be replaced by the new core modules: Introduction to Dutch Studies 1 (various topics including history and literature); Introduction to Dutch Studies 2 (various topics including cultural studies).

French

A-level French (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for all FREN* modules (except modules designed for ab initio students, i.e., French for Beginners and French Lit in Translation):

From 24-25, FREN0005 and FREN0006 will be compulsory core modules for all (post A-level) Joint Honours, Major/ Minor, and Single Honours students taking French.

German

From 2024-25, there will be two new compulsory core modules for all Joint Honours, Major/ Minor, and Single Honours students of German: Introduction to German Studies 1 (literature; film); Introduction to German Studies 2 (history; linguistics).

Italian

From 24-25, there will be two new compulsory core modules for all Joint Honours, Major/ Minor, and Single Honours students of Italian: Introduction to Italian Studies 1 (various topics including literature and history); Introduction to Italian Studies 2 (various topics depending on staff availability).

Scandinavian Studies

From 2024-25, there will be two new compulsory core modules for all Joint Honours, Major/ Minor, and Single Honours students of Scandinavian Studies: Introduction to Nordic Studies 1 (various topics including literature and history); Introduction to Nordic Studies 2 (cultural studies).

Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies

Spanish:

A-level Spanish (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for all SPAN* modules:

From 24-25, Y1 Joint Honours, Major/ Minor and Single Honours students of Spanish and Latin American Studies will be required to take the following core modules: Introduction to Spanish and Latin American Studies 1 (history and culture up to 19C); Introduction to Spanish and Latin American Studies 2 (history and culture up to present day).

Major/ Minor and Single Honours students will also be required to take two other core modules: Power of Words (literature); Power of Images (visual culture).
