Professor Nicola Miller Appointed as the New Director of the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies

Nicola joined UCL in 1990, and became Professor of Latin American History in 2007. Her research is focused on the intellectual, cultural, political and international history of the Americas, in comparative and transnational perspectives; and in nationalism and national identity, especially in the Americas. Her recent research has been on the history and politics of knowledge.

Professor Miller will take up her IAS post in autumn 2020, succeeding Professor Tamar Garb (UCL History of Art), the Institute’s inaugural Director since its establishment in 2015.

Professor Garb said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Nicola Miller on her appointment. This is a very exciting moment for the IAS. With a distinguished intellectual historian at the helm, it is sure to go in new directions. One of the joys of leading the IAS over the past five years has been the opportunity to draw on the extraordinary talent and energy at UCL. The IAS is its community of thinkers, and these include researchers at all stages of their careers and with wide-ranging interests and passions. I know Nicola will be able to continue to draw on the expertise and enthusiasm that exists across UCL for adventurous, interdisciplinary research. I am very much looking forward to working with her to enable a transition to its new stage and will watch with great interest to see how it grows and prospers in the years ahead.”

Commenting on her appointment, Nicola said, “This is an exciting opportunity to build on all the impressive work that Tamar Garb has led over the last five years. I feel privileged to take on this role and am greatly looking forward to working with the IAS staff, with its community of researchers and with colleagues across UCL to take the IAS forward into the next stage of its development.”
