Research shows that UK workers have missed out on essential soft skills training, costing the UK an estimated £22bn per year (Skills Builder Partnership, CIPD, KPMG and Edge Foundation, 2023).

Human skills are the soft skills that help us to work well together – think confidence, curiosity and experimentation, emotional intelligence, supporting and celebrating others, communication, and self-reflection.

Strong human skills help us to produce better work, experience more job satisfaction, progress within our careers, and earn higher salaries – so we need to talk about them more.

This talk explores the power of human skills and the role they play in futureproofing our careers. We’ll cover:

  • Personal power: How human skills help us to share ideas, build working relationships, and find our career direction.
  • Technological power: How human skills help us to build better, ethical tech.
  • Financial power: How human skills help us to earn more.

Venue: Bloomsbury campus (room will be shared with those who register)
Date: Tuesday 21 January 2025
Time: 6–7 pm talk followed by 7–8 pm informal discussion and networking

Please note that attendees will have to register, please complete the required form via the 'Book Now' link. For more information please visit the Let's Talk Human Skills Website.

About the Speaker

Dr Hayley Dawson

Founder of Let’s Talk Human Skills

Hayley is the founder and host of Let’s Talk Human Skills – a career development workshop series and conversation series that helps people to work well together.

She built a career as a Spanish to English translator, subtitler, respeaker, and trainer where she worked on EU- and ESRC-funded projects at universities in the UK and Spain and completed over 200 subtitling projects for Netflix and Prime content. She has since progressed as an accessibility researcher in the charity sector and has held multiple leadership roles.

Hayley’s squiggly career has been full of work requiring technical ability: command of a foreign language, translation, lesson planning, data analysis, and strategic thinking. Her technical skills were strong, but she was rarely praised on them. Instead, she was complimented on her curiosity, confidence, ability to self-reflect, and the way she supported people. She calls these skills human skills.

Now, Hayley partners with workplaces and universities to help teams and students make themselves easy people to work with and build their careers.
