Join us for a lunchtime discussion in French with Caroline Guiela Nguyen, a playwright, theatre director, and, since 2023, the director of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg (TNS) and its school. Through her plays, Guiela Nguyen has sought to create a space for people who have historically been marginalised or ignored, from SAIGON, about the experiences of Vietnamese people in the aftermath of the War, to Kindheitsarchive, about an international adoption centre, to her most recent play, Lacrima, about the labourers around the world crafting a wedding dress for an English princess. Her work is polyphonic, drawing on interviews and collaborative workshops, and multilingual, bringing together actors who speak French, Vietnamese, Tamil, and German, among other languages. She is bringing the same values to her leadership of the TNS, promising to put diversity at the heart of the theatre's programming and the school's pedagogy.
During this discussion, Caroline will talk about her vision for the TNS, the importance of multilingualism and translation to her work, and how she is opening the theatre as an institution to more people.
The discussion will be in French. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. Please reserve your place through the Eventbrite.
