Resurrección, ecological emergency and cosmopolitical aesthetics
This talk will address the Mexican eco-film Resurrección (Resurrection, Polgovsky, 2016) which deals with the catastrophic contamination of Jalisco’s River Santiago by industrial waste. It will discuss the slow violence of environmental poisoning in this region and the campaign of collective Un Salto de Vida, who feature prominently in the film, against it. It will explore the heterogenous worlds and uncanny, sensorial aesthetics that characterise the film, arguing that through them, it makes a significant contribution to the search for visual forms through which to represent eco-catastrophe. The talk will also reflect on videographic and written forms of film scholarship and the challenges and insights that arose while working on this material videographically.
