Dr Claudio Fantinuoli (University of Mainz, Germany), ‘Artificial intelligence and interpreting: supporting tool and full automation’.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence has proved effective in performing many complex activities in different fields such as natural language processing, robotics, and medical diagnosis, to name just a few. It is generally accepted that the integration of AI in the workplace has the potential to change many aspects of work practices and that the “technological turn” brought by digital transformation has reached the interpreting profession.

In this talk I will frame the interpreting profession in the context of technological progress. In particular, I will focus on tools that support and augment interpreters, such as computer-assisted interpreting programs, as well as tools that offer automatic translation of oral speeches. A discussion on current research as well as on state-of-the-art technologies and their prospective developments will shed light on the potential and the limits of AI in the area of interpreting.
