We launched a new European Institute Student Ambassador programme in the 2022-23 academic year, providing UCL students with valuable learning opportunities and enabling the European Institute to engage more UCL students in our activities.
European Institute Ambassadors work alongside our interns and staff members to promote the role of the European Institute and its activities to a student audience. Ambassadors foster ties with student societies, inform student activities and events, contribute to new initiatives, and participate in workshops, roundtables and talks hosted by the European Institute.
As a voluntary role, Student Ambassadors are encouraged to shape their contributions and access opportunities in line with their own interests in European politics, culture and identity.
“I had an amazing time as a Student Ambassador for the European Institute. It is a great way to contribute to projects, meet and collaborate with new people, gain valuable experience, as well as learn about the European Institute and the work that they do." - Irini Tombazi
Forging opportunities for students
In the first year of Student Ambassador programme, students developed new social media content, created links with Europe-related student societies, contributed to our UCL Europe Blog, and contributed ideas for public events and student masterclasses. The Student Ambassadors also benefited from several learning and development opportunities in line with their own academic interests. A small sample of these opportunities included:
- Interviewing former Secretary General of the European Parliament Klaus Welle.
- Attending an event on UK-French relations hosted by the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
- Participating in the European Horizons conference at Yale University in April 2023.
- Travelling to a European Parliament-sponsored bootcamp in Strasbourg.
