Julia Anting Wolff

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Julia and I’m a final-year International Social and Political Studies student. My parents are from Germany and Spain, but I grew up across five European cities (Munich, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Zurich, and Warsaw), before coming to London for University. I have just returned from my year abroad in Taipei, which was an exciting chance to explore a new part of the world!

In my free time, I love exploring new restaurants and food. I’m also a black belt in Taekwondo and have recently taken up cycling.

What areas or topics of study are you interested in, and how have you explored them at UCL?

I’m very interested in the changing role of China on the global stage. This is why my degree has focused primarily on Chinese politics and economics, as well as the relationship between China and other nations. I have been learning Mandarin and am writing my dissertation on EU-China trade relations.

I also have a strong interest in the United Nations and the role of multilateral organizations in achieving sustainable development. I have been able to explore this interest through my engagement with UCL’s United Nations Association, which eventually led to my attendance at the 2024 ECOSOC Youth Forum last April in New York.

Why are you interested in Europe?

My interest in Europe was first sparked by my personal background having lived in various European countries and seeing how these countries interact with each other and the world. I believe that European collaboration is crucial to addressing today’s major global issues and am particularly interested in the responsibility of European nations when it comes to sustainable development.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years I hope to work in some capacity promoting the sustainable development goals, be that through an international organization like the UN or by working in sustainable finance.
