Jonathan Freedland delivers 2025 Julian Priestley Memorial Lecture
8 May 2025

In the seventh annual Julian Priestley Lecture, held on 7 May 2025, Jonathan Freedland explored how the evolving political landscape under Donald Trump demands a fundamental rethink of the UK´s relationship with Europe.
Freedland examines the implications of America´s shifting global role and argues that the UK can no longer rely on traditional transatlantic assumptions. This lecture forms part of a series established in memory of Julian Priestley, former Secretary General of the European Parliament (1997 – 2007), honouring his deep commitment to the European ideal.
UCL European Institute hosted the 2024 Memorial Lecture featuring Annette Dittert.
This year's event was co-sponsored by the European Movement UK and features a drinks reception hosted by Baroness Royall, Principal of Somerville.
