The UCL European Institute brought the European Literary Map of London to life at the EU Citizens' Gathering 2024.

This week, the UCL European Institute was privileged to participate in the EU Citizens' Gathering 2024 hosted by the EU Delegation to the UK. Held in London, this event brought together a diverse mix of EU representatives, researchers, community advocates, and UK politicians, united in their commitment to empowering EU citizens and strengthening EU-UK relations.

The Institute was thrilled to contribute by showcasing the European Literary Map of London (ELML) in the main conference room, which drew considerable interest from attendees. The map—an interactive project highlighting places in London with rich literary connections to Europe—allowed participants to tangibly explore cultural ties. The ELML display encouraged people to engage by leaving suggestions for new literary locations, and it was met with enthusiastic engagement from delegates, including the EU Ambassador to the UK, Pedro Serrano.

Beyond the display, the gathering provided invaluable insights and strengthened our resolve to support EU citizens facing challenges in the UK. A highlight was our participation in the workshop Practical Responses to Issues Affecting Ethnic Minority EU Citizens, led by Aké Achi, co-founder and CEO of Black Europeans. This session highlighted the unique experiences of ethnic minority EU citizens and practical strategies for support and advocacy, underscoring the importance of inclusive approaches in policy and community work.

This event also offered insights and exchange on issues from Brexit's long-term impacts on EU citizens' rights to the importance of online information integrity in the age of misinformation. We look forward to incorporating the ideas and insights gained into our ongoing work.
