Black Europe workshop

The research workshop was supported by the Institute of Advanced Studies.

On Monday 13th March we hosted a research workshop featuring papers from Dr Jeff Bowersox: ‘Performing Blackness for Germans: African-American Entertainers and the Politics of Race before the Jazz Age’, and PhD student Bea Gassman de Sousa: ‘The ‘ideas of Africa: Four Stories’.
 

Academics came together to discuss and reflect on the aims of the Black Europe Workstream, the challenges (and upsides) of using terminology such as Black Europe, and how socio-historical and national differences continue to shape racial identities in and through our discussions on racism(s).
