Future trade relations between the EU and the UK: options after Brexit
Piet Eeckhout, Dean of UCL Faculty of Laws and Academic Director, European Institute
This paper, a major study for the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA), distributed to all MEPs, analyses the options and models for EU-UK trade post-Brexit in extensive detail.
Eeckhout outlines two paradigms for trade between soveriegn sates: market integration and trade liberalisation. The EU's single market represents the market integration paradigm, with all free trade agreements representing the trade liberalisation paradigm. Comparing and contrasting these two paradigms, Eeckhout concludes that the UK's wish for a bespoke model - combing elements of the two - will not be possible to fulfil, for a range of legal and political reasons.
