The European Institute's former director, Prof Richard Bellamy, has guest edited a special issue journal on "National Parliaments and the Politicization of European Integration" with Dr Sandra Kröger.
The articles are concerned with what has been called a "democratic disconnect" between the domestic democratic institutions of the member states and the EU, rather than a democratic deficit in the operation of EU institutions. Consequently, the contributors look at how EU policymaking might be authorized by, and rendered more responsive and accountable to, the citizens of the member states. In particular, they exmaine the role national parliaments can play as a mechanism of democratic "reconnection" by making EU affairs and policymaking figure more prominently in domestic democratic processes.
The first article of the special edition, also authored by Richard Bellamy and Sandra Kröger, is currently available for download free of charge.
