Human rights are under threat in Britain. The Conservative government's actions, including compromising refugees' safe routes and sending migrants to Rwanda, suggest that they are going beyond a simple Hard Brexit to distance the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights. This is not a reclamation of sovereignty, but rather a concerning step away from the UK's legacy as a member of the rights-based community it helped create.

Irina von Wiese, Affiliate Professor at ESCP, former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Human Rights Subcommittee, will discuss her role in the European Parliament, the worrying trends she has noticed in the UK, and how we can ensure that rights are protected from populist governments.

This is a joint event between the Liberal Democrat and European Horizons Societies. Everyone is encouraged to get at least taster membership for both societies.
