The Covid-19 pandemic has presented a disproportionate risk for older generations, and required extraordinary sacrifices from the young – underlining concerns about intergenerational equity, already looming large as a result of austerity and the climate emergency.
As governments across Europe aim to ‘build back better’, the 2021 Sakharov debate will explore the impacts of the pandemic on older and younger generations; policy approaches to intergenerational equity; and youth perspectives on a sustainable, post-Covid European society.
The Sakharov debate is an annual public event held in honour of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, bringing together academics, law-makers and civil society to discuss topical issues with a human rights dimension.
