The UCL Centre for Research on the Dynamics of Civilization (CREDOC) presents two discussions of Muslim Responses to Westernisation, the second of which is a panel discussion on living in non-Islam societies. The panellists will discuss debates about pluralism, integration and 'Fundamentally British Values'.
Speakers:
- Claire Dwyer (Migration Research Unit, Geography, UCL) on how issues of 'integration' are contested and constructed by British Muslims drawing on research on state-funded Muslim schools and university Islamic Societies
- Myriam Hunter-Henin (Faculty of Laws, UCL) on recent debates over how the Fundamentally British Values discourse shapes Muslim identities
- Alison Scott-Baumann (Professor of Society and Belief, Dept. of Religions and Philosophies, SOAS) on impacts of the 'free speech' debate for Muslims on campus and related positionality issues for the non-Muslim researcher
Respondent:
- Faisal Devji (Modern South Asian History, University of Oxford) on India as a world in miniature and the creation within it of a pluralist imagination
Tea or coffee will be available just before the start of the event. All are welcome.

The panel discussion will be preceded by a lecture the day before on Retreat from the Secular Path, given by John Esposito from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday 7 December 2017 in the IAS Common Ground. Further details here.
