Background

Two of Europe's leading research institutions, University College London (UCL), currently ranked 7th in the world, and the Max Planck Society (MPS), Germany's most successful research organization, are holding a one-day conference. It will celebrate UK-German research collaboration, provide an outstanding opportunity for senior and junior academics to network and establish new collaborative ventures, and cement the close ties between the two organisations. By so doing, it will also pay tribute to the European Commission Framework Programmes, which provided the funds to enable these two great institutions to work together so successfully.

The conference will focus on topics that are of mutual interest to UCL and the MPS and into which collaborative research is currently being undertaken. One speaker from UCL and one from the MPS will address each of the topics selected. Posters from junior researchers at each institution will be on display during the conference.
The President and Provost of UCL, Professor Malcolm Grant, and the President of the MPS, Professor Peter Gruss, will jointly host the event. The conference will be inaugurated by keynote speeches from key figures in the European research policy field, placing the proceedings in the context of current UK and EU research strategies.
