The UCL European Institute and UCLU European Society are delighted to welcome Sir Tony Brenton, former British Ambassador to the Russian Federation 2004-2008, for a talk on "Russia and Europe: Friends or Foes?".
The event will be chaired by Dr Robin Aizlewood, Director of the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies.
Sir Tony started his career in the British Foreign Office in 1975 learning Arabic and working in the British Embassy in Cairo for three years. In the following he worked in London and Brussels on European Community Foreign, Energy Policy and Environment Policy. He further specialised on the issue of environmental and energy policy during his sabbatical at Harvard University when he wrote "The Greening of Machiavelli - The History of International Environmental Politics". Back in London, he headed a UN Department in the Foreign Office from 1989 to 90 and among other things negotiated for the 1992 Rio "Earth Summit".
Sir Tony first worked in the British Embassy in Moscow from 1994 to 1998 and served as British Ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2004 to 2008. In 2007 he was awarded a KCMG, the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.
Since 2009 he has been a fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge. He also works as an advisor to Lloyd's Insurance and to the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy.
