An overview of the Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works timeline is as follows. Please note the exact dates and further information will continue to be updated on this page.

Works Lookahead

As major demolition is taking, we recommend rearranging in-person meetings to online if necessary to avoid potential noise impact.

Please note that the contractor will be undertaking a Crane Lift on Wednesday 7 May 2025. No changes in access to the Main Quad anticipated and fire escapes will be maintained in the event of a fire. Note that there may be periods of 'exclusion zones' to the Japanese Garden and Wilkins Terrace during the time of the lift. This will be managed by security, but is not anticipated to impact any access routes.

Floor Plans

Please refer to the latest floor plans below to better understand which spaces will be accessible or inaccessible in the Wilkins Building and Quad from Wednesday, 5 Feb onwards. If you need any support onsite, please refer to the nearest security point.

If you have additional requirements:

  1. There remains an accessible route into both sides of the building.
  2. The security lodge at the front gate will remain open throughout the works, as well as having Campus Experience Team staff located within the vicinity such as at the Student Centre. Please refer to them for support if needed.

Fire Safety

Please refer to the fire evacuation plan below to understand both the accessible and inaccessible escape routes in case of a fire or emergency. You can also download a copy

  1. For users within the Slade, Chadwick, South Wing and North-West Wing, your evacuation routes will remain the same, however you no longer have an evacuation point, instead you should disperse from the area. You may then return 30 minutes later for an update to determine whether you will be allowed to re-enter the building.
  2. For users within the Wilkins Terrace, Jeremy Bentham Room, Garden Room and local offices, please use your nearest available fire exit and vacate the building, following the green emergency exit signs.
  3. If you have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) please contact your Department Safety Officer or line manager to review whether your evacuation plan has been affected by the construction work. Should you require additional support, you will be able to liaise with the fire team via fire@ucl.ac.uk.

Things to Consider

  1. You may wish to amend your route to avoid the central areas or allow for additional time when travelling.
  2. Be respectful of others when on the alternate paths provided, as the spaces will feel busier and more crowded.
  3. It is recommended that you check the Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works webpages before you visit campus, to ensure that nothing has changed since your last visit. You can find out information including timelines, FAQs and access routes.
