Gower Street partially closed for two weeks as second phase of resurfacing begins

The works will require the use of heavy machinery to break up the road surface and move materials. It is anticipated that this will cause some vibration and substantial noise. The works are being undertaken by Eurovia on behalf of Camden Council and are part of the West End Project programme of works to improve the public realm.

Tony Overbury the UCL WEP/HS2 Liaison comments: “These works should not disrupt pedestrian walkways at all but traffic south from Torrington Place along Gower Street will be diverted via nearby roads. We continue to engage with Camden and Eurovia regularly to minimise the disruption it is really important that the impact of the works on UCL and other local businesses is minimised as best as possible. If these works cause unexpected disruption to your building please get in touch immediately.”

UCL will continue to engage with Camden Council and their contractor, Eurovia, to raise any concerns for the wellbeing of all members of the UCL community for the duration of these works. Gower Street will become open to two-way traffic once the entire street has been resurfaced. A small portion of Gower Street between Euston Road and Gower Place cannot be resurfaced until currently ongoing works rerouting high-voltage cables are complete. Due to delays for the contractors undertaking these works we now expect this to happen after Easter. Previously we had been told by Camden Council they expected two-way flow on Gower Street to commence from Easter. Camden Council will provide UCL and neighbours on Gower Street with a more accurate timescale when they can.

It is important to note that these times are subject to change due to a number of reasons including work overrunning the allotted time. This is a major infrastructure project being undertaken by Camden Council. Therefore UCL can seek to influence the Council on the undertaking of the works but has no direct control over the works.
