Fire Hazard – Your vehicle is not permitted to be here, please move to a safe location

Your Personal Light Electric Vehicle (PLEV) (i.e. e-bike, e-scooter etc) has been tagged because it was found stored or left in a location where PLEVs are not permitted under UCL policy 'TN066'

What you must do next

Please remove your PLEV from this area immediately and ensure it is not brought back into this location. Only store or park your PLEV in areas explicitly approved under UCL policy.

Where can I store my PLEV

The Fire Safety Team has assessed all bicycle storage areas within UCL’s estate to identify which locations are suitable for the storage of legal PLEVs. You can see a list of approved storage sites on the Fire Safety team SharePoint.

Why your PLEV was tagged

  • Your PLEV pose a significant fire safety risk, particularly when stored in escape routes, circulation spaces, teaching rooms, high-risk areas, or any area not designated for battery-powered devices.
  • E-scooters and fully electric e-bikes (with throttle-only operation) are not considered legal for use on public roads or pavements in the UK and therefore must not be brought into or stored within UCL buildings.

Why this is important

Lithium-ion batteries used in PLEVs can fail without warning and may experience thermal runaway which may lead to:

  • Rapid-fire development
  • Toxic smoke release
  • Explosion risks
  • Compromised building evacuation routes

For these reasons, UCL have implemented necessary controls to protect all building occupants. You can read UCL's Technical Note 066 for guidance and more detail on what is allowed and what is prohibited.

If your PLEV is found here again

If this PLEV is found stored in this area again, it will unfortunately be removed due to the fire risk it presents and UCL’s responsibility to maintain a safe environment for all staff, students and visitors.
