Food waste

Find out what happens to the food waste from UCL catering facilities and office kitchens.

Such materials are treated as non-recyclable waste and include:

  • Food (where there is no facility to segregate food waste)
  • Food-contaminated packaging
  • Polystyrene

Bins for non-recyclable waste are put into offices and kitchens and are denoted by a black label. Waste is removed by the UCL cleaners and taken to the building’s waste collection point.

For some buildings the waste is collected in wheelie bins, while others the bags are piled up in the designated point outside the building. The bags containing non-recyclable waste are kept separate from the bags containing recyclable materials and are collected each day (Mon-Fri).
Non-recyclable waste is taken to an Energy from Waste plant where it is incinerated with generating electricity for the surrounding area.
A waste transfer note is completed annually and is available on request from the UCL Waste Manager (who is based in Estates).

None of UCL's waste is sent to landfill.
