13 August 2021

Advance HE has recently launched the transformed Athena Swan - an updated gender equality framework.

What is the new framework?

It has been developed over the last few years and aims to make the Charter more flexible, supportive and reduce administrative burden.

Should we submit under the new Athena Swan framework, or the current post-May 2015 framework?

The EDI team strongly recommend departments use the current ‘post-May 2015’ submission document until the November 2022 submission round (this is the last round this submission form will be accepted by Advance HE).

Over the past few years the provision for the current Athena Swan criteria has been improved and this is where the team can support departments best and add value to submissions – through the guidance available on the share point site and the mock panel process. This means departments will have the best chance of success in their application.

If departments choose to submit under the new transformed Athena Swan framework, the team are not yet able to provide support. This is because the team are getting to grips with the new framework themselves so that they can develop the best support materials for departments.
