The matter of Black lives: Dirty Computer (film club)
08 October 2020, 5:30 pm–7:00 pm

Dystopias, mind-alteration, androids are some of the subjects of award-winning musician and actress Janelle Monáe's 2018 Dirty Computer. In this film, or “emotion picture” that accompanies her album of the same name, Monáe explores oppression and liberation through a Black queer feminist framework.

How can you use the critical skills you will develop during your UCL education to analyze film, visual culture, music, and even popular culture more broadly? Dr. Jonathan Ward (King's College London) and UCL English PhD student Rolake Osabia will present on Black queerness in Monáe's work and Black feminism broadly to spark discussions about Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer.
While we will be screening clips from Dirty Computer during this event, participants are expected to have watched it in advance on YouTube.
