2012 Seminar Series
Title: 'Social Capital and Oral Health in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing - ELSA'
Speaker: Patrick Rouxel
Date & Time: Friday 16th March 1pm-2pm
Venue: G37 & G38
Strengthening good health and preventing disease are important strategies for ‘Healthy Ageing”. Oral health is an important part of general health and is essential to well-being. An extensive literature has revealed that social capital, a key social determinant, has an important influence on health. Access to social capital may enable older people to maintain productive independent and fulfilling lives. However, few studies have examined the association between social capital and oral health, and most studies have focused on younger age groups. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the flourishing literature on social capital by investigating whether a network approach of social capital is associated with oral health among older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA).
As a first step, this study sets out to explore the association between positive and negative exchanges and oral health, and identify which types of social relationship are more influential. Future work will explore how both structural and cognitive social capital change over time, and investigate changes in oral health and social capital between ELSA wave 3 (2006-07) and wave 5 (2010-11).
Patrick Rouxel graduated in dentistry from University René Descartes, Paris V, France.
