The MSc Dental Public Health Aubrey Sheiham Scholarship

The UCL Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is pleased to offer two one-year Scholarships for full-time students undertaking the MSc in Dental Public Health. The awards will commence in September 2024 and the Scholarships will consist of £2,500 towards tuition fees for home students and £5,000 for overseas students. The recipients will be expected to secure the remaining part of their tuition fees and to cover their living costs.

The overseas Scholarship is funded through very generous personal donations from Dr Garry Rayant and Dr Kathy Fields, and Dr Helena Cronin in honour of the late Professor Aubrey Sheiham, an inspirational dental public health scholar who originally established the UCL MSc course and who taught and enthused many students across his distinguished academic career.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must commit to pursue the full-time UCL MSc in Dental Public Health and must have received an unconditional offer of admission. Applicants with a conditional offer can apply for the Scholarship but must receive an unconditional offer before 16th August 2024 to be eligible for the Scholarship.

Selection criteria

Awards will be made on the basis of experience, qualifications and future academic potential assessed by curriculum vitae and depending on the number of applications received, through online interviews. Short-listed candidates will be also asked to write a 1000-word essay on a pre-defined public health topic. The Scholarships will be awarded upon the recommendation of an academic selection panel chaired by the Head of the Dental Public Health research group, Professor Richard Watt

Value and duration

The value of each award is £2,500 (home students) and £5,000 (overseas students). Awards are tenable for one year of full-time study only for the session 2024-2025. Terms and conditions of the award:

  • The Scholarship may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards or bursaries.
  • The Scholarship cannot be transferred to another institution, nor deferred to a later year.
  • The Scholarship will go towards the recipient's tuition fees; any remaining tuition fees will be payable by the recipient.
  • The Scholarship payments will only be made if the recipient is fully enrolled on the MSc Dental Public Health programme (2024/25 entry).
  • All awards are subject to the provisions of the General Regulations for Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries, Prizes and medals.

Application procedure: Eligible candidates must submit a copy of their UCL offer, CV and supporting statement to dentalpublichealth@ucl.ac.uk

Scholarship Application deadline

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on 28th June 2024. Applications will be reviewed by the academic selection panel and short-listed candidates will be given a topic for the essay.

Important notes

Scholarship applicants without an unconditional or conditional offer at the time of the Scholarship deadline will be excluded from the application process at this point. It is for this reason that we recommend you apply for admission as early as possible.

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.  It is expected that the whole selection process will be completed by the 19th July 2024. All applicants will be notified either by email about the outcome of their application thereafter.

Alumni Matoula Taloumtzi provides a few words below regarding winning the 2016/17 scholarship:

" I feel very honoured that I was granted the Aubrey Sheiham scholarship; even more after researching Aubrey Sheiham's extensive contribution to the discipline of Dental Public Health. The scholarship was a great help in the first steps of the MSc path, offering a financial boost to alleviate the stress of the expensive London life. It was also a very good opportunity to do a little bit of research and warm up one's writing skills, as we definitely needed these later in our studies. I would strongly advise any future students not to miss this great opportunity. For me, it was a great welcome in what was going to be a great year; full of really good friends, very good and supportive teachers, and tons of interesting pieces of knowledge."
