Supervisor: Dr Sophie Park
The Primary Care Educational Research Group supports projects aimed to evaluate and enhance quality of
educational programmes primarily relating to community based teaching. Our group uses a range of
quantitative, qualitative and synthesis methodologies to examine learning and teaching in general practice.
We have strong collaborative links with UCL colleagues in the School of Pharmacy, ACME (Academic Centre
for Medical Education) and the Institute of Education. We form part of the BEME (best evidence in medical
education) International Collaboration Centre (BICC), which supports and produces systematic reviews in
medical education. Collaboration with this group offers opportunities for a range of projects. There are
opportunities for presentation of work at conferences including the Association of Medication Education
(ASME - publisher of Medical Education), European Association of Medical Education (AMEE - publisher of
Medical Teacher), Researching Medical Education Autumn conference (ASME -IOE collaboration) and
attendance at clinical education research seminars.
Project: Decision-making in A+E postgraduate trainees
Supervisor: Dr Sophie Park
This is a collaborative project with the e-health unit and Institute of Education funded by IOE/UCL
collaborative funding. We are examining interactions between Consultant supervisors and
Foundation trainees within the A+E setting, looking in particular at processes of decision-making.
We have video and audio recordings, as well as field notes. We are an inter-disciplinary research
group and are using a variety analytic techniques to approach this data including conversation
analysis, narrative analysis and Foucauldian Discourse Analysis.
Project: Patient participation in medical education
Supervisor: Dr Sophie Park
This project has a number of strands. These include an NSPCR funded study translating the findings
of a meta-ethnography about patient participation in general practice undergraduate medical
student teaching encounters. A second project, funded by the RCGP scientific fund, is using focus
groups to explore patient views about the form and content of patient resources. This work is
intended to consider and inform future resources and recommendations about patient
participation in general practice medical education.
Project: Knowledge Translation
Supervisor: Dr Sophie Park
We are members of the Best Evidence in Medication Education (BEME) International Collaboration
Centre (the London BICC). We recently completed a BEME systematic review of medical education
in the UK general practice setting. There are exciting opportunities to work with the BICC on
projects about research translation and changing practice in clinical education. This includes
examination of available research evidence and consideration of the relationship between research
and practice contexts. There may also be opportunities for contributing to a systematic review of
medical education literature.
