Evidence from ICLS research on the links between adverse experiences in childhood and negative outcomes later in life has been published as part of a Parliamentary inquiry. The Science and Technology Committee is examining the strength of the evidence linking adverse childhood experiences with long-term negative outcomes, the evidence base for related interventions, whether evidence is being used effectively in policy-making, and the support and oversight for research into this area.

Publication of written evidence, including the submission from ICLS, comes after the Government expressed concerns that research in this area was not being used effectively in the creation of health policy and other support arrangements.

The ICLS submission points to 'the large body of evidence' on the lifelong consequences of adverse childhood experiences and new research taking place at the Centre to create more reliable and accurate evidence.

It goes on to make a number of recommendations to the Inquiry including the need to recognise that current methods are limited and the importance of using Birth Cohort Studies to help develop more robust evidence and cost effective interventions.
