My PhD Title: Methods for handling incomplete baseline data in longitudinal electronic health records.

Supervisor: Professor Irene Petersen

Lay summary: Electronic health records (EHR), such as those routinely collected in general medical practice, are good sources for obtaining patients real-life data which is valuable for health research. Nevertheless, missing records are a very common issue in EHR. There are different statistical methods for handling missing data in EHR; however, there are very few investigations about how previous and posterior information can improve missing data handling at any predefined baseline (for example, a drug treatment initiation). Theory and empirical evidence suggest this is a promising area of exploration, especially for multiple imputation. The aim of my whole PhD research is to investigate methods for handling incomplete baseline data, contrasting standard approaches with those using pre and post baseline auxiliary data. For doing so, I will investigate missing data in EHR via: 1) exploration of their proportions, patterns and mechanisms before and after baseline in specific case studies, 2) comparison of standard approaches to deal with incomplete records against those using pre and post baseline auxiliary data in specific case studies, 3) evaluation of what can be gained from using pre and post baseline auxiliary data via simulation studies. PhD results will help researchers to deal with missing data in observational studies.

My Background I started my research experiences in the world of psychometrics. My first grant funded a research for developing a new digital version of the Raven's Test. During my time in PSYCOPERU, I developed two new original tests, one for dyslexia screening and another one for assessing moral judgment. Following my studies in statistics and research epidemiology, I expanded my areas of interest to chronic diseases. Topics such as cardiovascular diseases risk scores, diabetes measurements at high altitude and tobacco consumption led mi research interests at the Center of Excellence in Chronic Diseases (CRONICAS). During this period, I received training in the U.S. National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and University of Pennsylvania. Two new seed grants were linked to these research and training activities. Since I was part of the Department of Statistics and the Faculty of Public Health at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, I earned more experience in statistical analysis and research by providing consultancy to the private sector and the Peruvian Government. All these experiences were linked to advanced statistics, so I became more interested in the exploration and criticism of quantitative methods. This motivation is guiding my current research activities in the PhD programme at UCL.
