There were over 70m prescriptions for antidepressants in 2018 in England yet the evidence for their effectiveness relies upon pharmaceutical industry studies carried out many decades ago for regulatory purposes. The PANDA RCT was designed to investigate the clinical effectiveness of sertraline compared to placebo in primary care patients presenting with depression. It also investigated potential mechanisms of action.
