My PhD Title: 'Proximal and distal determinants of timely access and delivery of lung cancer-care and the role of patient navigation programs as a tool for early diagnosis and treatment'
Supervisor: Hynek Pikhart, Cecilia Vindrola, Anne Peasey, Michael Marmot
Lay summary:
This mixed methods research protocol will identify the proximal and distal barriers encountered by lung cancer patients throughout their pathway to treatment and measure their role in delaying cancer care. In parallel, the role of Mexican patient navigation programes in early diagnosis and treatment will be analyzed and evaluated. Patient data will be collected through surveys and extracted from electronic health records from the National Cancer Institute; while navigators from different programs will be interviewed. Outcomes from this research will be useful to set specific targets for the time-to-lung-cancer-treatment in health institutions and patient navigation programs. Lastly, this study provides evidence for the design, focus and evaluation of a patient navigation program as a tool for secondary prevention.
I am currently funded by CONACYT and working in collaboration with the Mexican Health Foundation (FUNSALUD) and the National Cancer Institute in Mexico
