The renEWL project is a multidisciplinary research consortium, jointly funded by the ESRC and MRC under the Lifelong Health and Wellbeing Cross-Council Programme initiative [ES/L002892/1] under the title of 'Integrated studies of working later in life: individual and contextual determinants of extended working'.  The consortium includes scientists in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London (UCL), the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing (LHA) at UCL, the Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine at Queen Mary University of London, the University of Stockholm and the Karolinska Institute.

Study Leaders:

Professor Jenny Head

Jenny Head is Principal Investigator of the renEWL research consortium and Reader in Medical and Social Statistics at UCL. Her research focuses on determinants of healthy ageing and healthy working lives.

Dr Mai Stafford

Mai Stafford is at the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL in London. She is a social epidemiologist with interests in social and psychological well-being in older age and longitudinal data analysis. She is co-Principal Investigator of the renEWL project.

Research Team:

Professor Kristina Alexanderson

Professor Alexanderson is International Co-Investigator on the reNEWL project. Kristina is Head of the Division of Social Insurance Medicine at the Karolinska Institute where she leads an interdisciplinary research group conducting research on sickness absence and disability pension.

Dr Dorina Cadar

Dr Cadar is a Research Associate at UCL whose research interests include modifiable risk factors associated with dementia, variability in cognitive and mental health, lifestyle behaviours and is interested how these factors influence working patterns and the decision of retirement in later life.

Dr Ewan Carr

Dr Carr is a Research Associate in the UCL Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. His research focuses on the interaction between work and health, and how this depends on contextual and life course influences.

Dr Charlotte Clark

Dr Clark is a Reader in Environmental and Mental Health Epidemiology at Queen Mary University of London, whose research interests include how common mental disorders and experience of material and psychosocial adversities across the lifecourse impact upon later working lives.

Dr Maria Fleischmann

Dr Fleischmann is a Research Associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. Her research interests include how work environment and health are related to later working lives and retirement.

Dr Gareth Hagger-Johnson

Dr Hagger-Johnson was a Senior Research Associate at UCL whose research interests included how health behaviours and symptoms of common mental disorder can influence working patterns in later life, and influence healthy ageing.

Professor Diana Kuh

Professor Kuh is the former Director of the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL and of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (MRC NSHD). Diana uses data from the MRC NSHD to study how biological, psychological and social factors at different stages of life, independently, cumulatively or interactively affect adult physical capability and musculoskeletal function and their change with age. She also uses this life course approach to study women's health, cardiovascular health and wellbeing.

Dr Emily Murray

Dr Murray is a Senior Research Associate at UCL.  Dr Murray's research interests include how individual and area-based socioeconomic characteristics across the lifecourse, and the variation and interactions between them, are related to healthy ageing.

Dr Nicola Shelton

Dr Shelton is head of the Health and Social Surveys Research Group, Director of CeLSIUS and Senior Lecturer at UCL.  Her research is on health geography, health surveillance and the outcomes that can be measured through large and complex health data sets. She has particular interests in alcohol consumption and physical activity and older people's health and wellbeing.

Professor Stephen Stansfeld

Professor Stansfeld is a psychiatric epidemiologist based at the Centre for Psychiatry, Barts and the London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London. His research interests include the impact of work on mental health, mental health inequalities and life course studies of psychosocial risk factors and common mental disorders

Profesor Hugo Westerlund

Professor Hugo Westerlund is International Co-Investigator on the reNEWL project. Hugo is Head of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University and PI on the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH).

Ms Baowen Xue

Baowen Xue is a Research Assistant at UCL, whose research interests include how individual and family socioeconomic characteristics across the lifecourse influence working patterns and the decision of retirement in later life, and influence healthy ageing.

Dr Paola Zaninotto

Dr Zaninotto is a Lecturer in Statistics at University College London (UCL). Her main area of research concerns statistical methods for the analysis of longitudinal data, in particular structural equation models, multilevel models, survival models and methods for dealing with missing data. Since 2006 she has been working with the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, with a research focus on trajectories of physical health and well-being in old age; the influence of early life conditions and work trajectories on health in later life.
