UNDRR-ISC Hazard Information Profiles (HIPs) 2025 update

The UNDRR–ISC HIPs provide a comprehensive, science-based overview of 281 hazards. This 2025 edition reflects a major shift toward a multi-hazard understanding of risk – recognizing that hazards often interact, cascade, or occur together in ways that intensify their impacts.

Description

First published in 2021 and now updated, the HIPs offer standardized definitions and key characteristics for a wide range of hazards across key clusters: 

  1. Meteorological and Hydrological  
  2. Extraterrestrial  
  3. Geological  
  4. Environmental  
  5. Chemical  
  6. Biological  
  7. Technological  
  8. Societal  

The profiles also now include improved machine-readability, making them more usable in digital platforms, early warning systems, and risk assessment tools. 

Widely used by governments, UN agencies, researchers, and disaster practitioners, the HIPs support more coherent risk analysis, planning, and reporting – strengthening the implementation of the Sendai Framework, the Sustainable Development Goals, and climate adaptation strategies.

 Professor Virginia Murray

Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction, UK Health Security Agency

Professor Virginia Murray is a public health doctor committed to improving health emergency and disaster risk management. She was appointed as Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction for UK Health Security Agency in April 2014. She is currently the chair of the UNDRR/ISC Hazard Information Profile Steering Group for the 2025 update, having been the Chair of the UNDRR/ISC Hazard Classification and Review Technical Working Group from 2019 with the report published in 2020 and the UNDRR-ISC Hazard Information Profiles: Supplement in 2021. She was a member and then vice-chair of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG), 2008-2017, supporting as required negotiations for the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 by the UN member states. She is a visiting/honorary Professor and fellow at several universities.

Professor John Rees

Chief Scientist at the British Geological Survey

JR
Professor John Rees focuses on the generation and application of novel approaches to building resilience to hazardous processes and events. Before becoming Chief Scientist at the British Geological Survey, he was: responsible for building transdisciplinary research and partnerships relating to the Resilience to environmental shocks and hazards portfolio of the UK Global Challenges Research Fund; was the UK Research Councils Risk Research Champion; was Natural Hazards Theme Leader at the Natural Environment Research Council; and co-initiated the UK Disaster Research Group as well as the UK Alliance for Disaster Research. He co-led the United Nations (UN) Major Group for Science and Technology leading up to the Sendai Framework as well as the recent revision of the Geological HIPs.
