Training on Risk Reduction Strategies in Cultural Heritage for AFAD
31 October 2024
UCL CEGE’s Dr Yasemin D Aktas Hosted a Training on Risk Reduction Strategies in Cultural Heritage for AFAD
Event
From October 15 to 18, 2024, UCL CEGE’s Dr Yasemin D Aktas and Kökcan Dönmez organised a comprehensive four-day training for Türkiye's AFAD (Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) focused on risk reduction strategies in cultural heritage. The programme developed in collaboration with Historic England, Historic Royal Palaces, Vakıflar, Middle East Technical University, Arup, TUDelft, University of Oxford and UCL’s UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Engineering, led to a fruitful exchange and lively discussions on cultural heritage resilience under geophysical hazards and in the face of a changing climate. Participants engaged in practical exercises as well as laboratory and site visits to equip them with essential theoretical and practical skills to preserve cultural heritage against global challenges posed by natural hazards.
This collaboration supported by UCL Public Policy and EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award (IAA) (Grant Reference EP/X525649/1) will continue beyond this training and through future visits will ensure policy-making and related implementations for disaster risk reduction in cultural heritage in Türkiye.
