Students field trip to Türkiye - MSc in Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management

13 June 2024

Students from the MSc in Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management just returned from their field trip to Türkiye to study the damage left by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes and to learn from the reconstruction and retrofitting efforts led by Turkish engineers.

EPICentre students field trip to Tukiye

The visit included 3 days of activity on the field, where our group visited Iskenderun, Antakya, Adiyaman, Golbasi, Pazarcik, Nurdagi and Gaziantep, and observed several cases of structural and non-structural building damage, damage due to liquefaction, retrofitting of structures and earthquake surface ruptures. In addition, they were immersed in the local culture through their amazing cuisine, architecture and art heritage.

Later, our students travelled to Istanbul, where they visited a residential construction project with four base-isolated structures with Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) devices, where they learned about the design of innovative structural solutions to improve the earthquake performance of buildings. Our students were also invited to visit the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) at Boğaziçi University, where they experienced a simulation of a Mw = 5.1 earthquake and visited some of the state-of-the-art facilities of the institute. The closing of our amazing field trip was at the historical Boğaziçi University South Campus, which possesses some of the most breathtaking views of Istanbul.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to Prof Ufuk Hancilar and Onur Çevik from KOERI and Boğaziçi University, who kindly supported our activities on the field and in Istanbul. We extend our gratitude to Mehmet Emre Özcanlı, HAYATI YALCIN, Ümit Özkan, Ahmet Ecevit, Hüseyin Akbaş, and the rest of the staff who welcomed us on the construction site, as well as to cenk erkmen, KEREM KUTERDEM and other members of T.C. İçişleri Bakanlığı Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı - AFAD, who provided invaluable advice to improve our field trip.
