New journal article on the seismic performance assessment of non-engineered masonry schools

8 January 2023

A journal article, part of the PhD research works of UNESCO Chair in DRR-RE researchers, Dr Rohit Kumar Adhikari and Dr Ahsana Parammal Vatteri, is published in the MDPI Buildings journal.

paper

This new journal article presents a seismic analysis and fragility assessment procedure for non-engineered masonry building typologies, employing the applied element method (AEM). Two novel aspects presented in this work are: 1) a new reliable pushover analysis approach based on incremental ground acceleration loading and 2) a methodology for seismic performance assessment and fragility evaluation of masonry buildings lacking box-like behaviour, by reliably accounting for both the in-plane and out-of-plane failure modes. The paper also presents the application of the proposed methodologies to a number of unreinforced and confined masonry school buildings with different seismic detailing levels, as often found in the Himalayan belt and beyond.

The article, part of the PhD research works of Dr Rohit Kumar Adhikari and Dr Ahsana Parammal Vatteri, contributes to advancing the numerical modelling and seismic assessment of masonry constructions.
