An online training course titled ‘Classification and vulnerability evaluation of school buildings for seismic risk reduction’ was successfully delivered by the UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Engineering (DRR&RE) at University College London (UCL) during 18-19 July 2022. The event began with an introductory presentation by the Chair, Prof. Dina D’Ayala, outlining the aims and objectives of the UNESCO Chair in DRR&RE and associated ongoing activities. This was followed by Dr. Carina Fonseca Ferreira’s presentation from The World Bank who presented on the wider activities of the Global Program for Safer Schools (GPSS). Then, several presentations were delivered by Dr. Rohit Kumar Adhikari, Dr. Ahsana Parammal Vatteri and Mr. Rafael Fernández, describing the technical details behind the World Bank’s Global Library of School Infrastructure (GLOSI) library, a live repository developed by University College London and Universidad de Los Andes Colombia. The event ended with an interesting presentation by Mr. Juan Carlos Atoche who explained the role of GLOSI in the national level disaster risk management of school infrastructure.

We estimate that there are more than 1 million school buildings worldwide that needs some time some type of intervention to be more resilient. To give you an idea of the scale, this is equivalent to 70% of all small buildings in China” – Dr. Carina Fonseca Ferreira
