Offshore lighthouses are architectural masterpieces shining for more than two centuries in the British seas. They have been equipped with helidecks on their very top back in 70s to let maintenance staff and inspectors have easy and quick access. Even though these helidecks have maintained their integrity and are still functional in the offshore harsh environmental conditions thanks to frequent costly inspections and repairs, it is known that the structural designs in 70s were not optimized due to lack of computational methods which are available today. Having powerful computational tools in hand and aiming at reducing the carbon footprint of these structures, we are an interdisciplinary team of researchers working closely with official authority and industrial partners, designing a new generation of light, robust and sustainable helidecks for offshore lighthouses.

About the Speaker

Dr Siamak Farajzadeh Khosroshahi

Research Fellow at UCL EPICentre

siamak
Siamak is a post-doctoral research fellow in computer aided engineering (CAE). He has more than ten years of (industrial and academic) experience in the field of design, material characterization and computational mechanics. He has got his PhD in Aerospace engineering from University of Padova in Italy and worked as a researcher at Imperial College London from 2019 to 2021. He is now working at University College London in an interdisciplinary project about the design of new generation of offshore helidecks for lighthouses. He is interested in the use of computational methods like FEM in design, analysis and optimisation of structures and systems. More about Dr Siamak Farajzadeh Khosroshahi
