Rossella Nicolin is a structural engineer with multi-disciplinary research interests including architecture, seismic engineering and sustainable design.  Since 2014, she is a Principal Engineer in AECOM, with a technical/management role in the Sports Structures team in London, specialised in large sports venues and stadium projects worldwide.  Being trained in Italy and USA at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she was based in New York and then London and worked on projects worldwide in UK, Europe, USA, Middle East and China.  Rossella is also active in International Development work and seismic assessments, having recently spent 5 weeks in Kathmandu working on the Nepal Earthquake Reconstruction.

Abstract

Nepal was hit by severe earthquakes in April and May 2015, causing widespread damage and casualties. Since then, a global effort had occurred to help the country in the reconstruction, involving international governments, NGOs and the private sector.  In this talk, Rossella Nicolin will discuss AECOM's mission in Kathmandu for the Nepal Earthquake Reconstruction programme. She will focus on her direct experience and will offer a perspective of the post-disaster situation in the country, presenting examples of the work performed in building assessment and in training modules for local engineers.
