Develop a short course

Deliver an effective and engaging short course with help from our online templates, workshops and one-to-one advice.

The Short Course Support team has put together a set of best practice techniques to make sure your research and ideas reach a wider audience.

You can use them to develop non-credit bearing short courses and continuing professional development (CPD), as well as summer school classes and executive education.

Why run a short course?

A successful short course can help you and your department:

  • reach a wider audience
  • promote a new topic or practice
  • raise your academic profile
  • build deeper relationships with external organisations
  • generate income

Types of support available

You’ll need to take a business-led approach to designing a course for an external audience. That means identifying demand, working out costs, developing a marketing plan and making sure your course meets legal requirements.

There are a number of ways you can get the input you need.

Attend a workshop

You can take the first steps towards planning, marketing and evaluating a course by booking a place on one of the team’s free lunchtime workshops.

Use the online short courses toolkit

This comprehensive resource takes you step by step through designing a course and writing a marketing plan to evaluating its impact, with advice, examples and downloadable templates.

Apply for funding

We make funding available each year to help staff deliver short courses that benefit the wider world, not just the learners.

Deciding between a bespoke or open short course

The route you initially choose for your idea will depend on your audience.

  • If an organisation is keen to partner with you, our Consultancy team can help price your project, negotiate your agreement and keep your interests protected.
  • If you’ve identified a broader group of learners for your topic, our Short Course Support team can help progress your idea.

Once you’ve successfully run this course, you can then adapt it to different audiences.
