Policy on Conflicts of Interest and Declarations of Interest

This policy helps UCL staff and doctoral students recognise activities that might lead to a perceived or actual conflict of interest, and understand how to manage these situations.

Overview

A conflict of interest arises when your responsibilities to UCL could be compromised (or appear to be compromised) by:

  • something you personally care about or benefit from (like a role you have in another organisation, a charity you volunteer for, or a gift), or
  • the interests of someone close to you (like a family member, friend, or collaborator).

This policy sets out how to recognise conflicts of interest, and what do you when there is a conflict.

All staff (including honorary and emeritus staff) and doctoral students must disclose any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest as soon as they arise. All conflicts must be managed with a conflict management plan or the activity creating the conflict stopped within two months of disclosure.

Staff at Grade 10, and some other senior staff (as detailed in the policy), are also required to complete an annual declaration of interests'.
